Matrix Algebra and Inverses
Matrices multiply row-by-column. The determinant measures how a matrix scales area (or volume); when it is zero the matrix has no inverse. For , , and inverses solve systems of equations in one step.
Learning objectives
- Add, subtract and multiply matrices, and know when a product is defined.
- Find determinants of and matrices.
- Find inverses and use .
- Solve systems of linear equations with inverses and interpret the result.
Is always equal to for matrices?
Core idea
A shop sells three bundles of pens, pencils and rubbers at different prices. Three receipts give three equations in three unknowns. Solving by elimination is long and fiddly. Packing the coefficients into a grid, a matrix, turns the whole system into one equation , solved in one step by "dividing" by .
Matrices multiply row by column; the product depends on order. The determinant is the area (volume) scale factor; if it is the matrix is singular and has no inverse. Otherwise .
1. Multiplying matrices
- where
- entry in row , column of the product.
- row of times column of , entry by entry, then added.
- Each row of has entries; each column of must also have .
- One entry for each (row of , column of ) pair.
, . Find and .
- Goal
- Both products.
- Strategy
- Row by column, carefully.
- on the right swaps the columns of .
- on the left swaps the rows of .
2. The determinant
- The columns are the images of the unit vectors.
- Linear maps send straight lines to straight lines.
- Bounding rectangle minus the corner triangles and rectangles (for the standard picture).
- Expand and simplify.
- where
- alternating signs along the top row.
- etc.
- the 2×2 minors left after deleting that entry's row and column.
Find for which is singular.
- Goal
- .
- Strategy
- Expand along the top row; set to zero.
- First minor: delete row 1, column 1.
- Second minor, with the minus sign.
- Third term vanishes.
- Singular means determinant zero.
3. Inverses
- Multiply out: off-diagonal terms cancel.
- A multiple of the identity.
- Divide by the determinant (only possible if it is non-zero).
- Matrix multiplication is associative.
- So undoes .
Solve , .
- Goal
- .
- Strategy
- .
- Coefficient matrix.
- Swap, negate, divide by 1.
- Multiply.
The determinant decides first; consistency decides the rest.
If , can still have solutions?
Summary
- Row by column; order matters.
- = area/volume scale factor.
- inverse: swap, negate, divide.
- ; .
- Singular
- Determinant zero; no inverse.
- Identity
- : leaves every vector unchanged.
- Cofactor
- Signed minor used in determinants and inverses.

Worked examples
Explore the graph
- The unit square goes to the parallelogram with corners , , , . Its area is .
- Make : the parallelogram flattens into a line, so no inverse can undo it.
is the factor by which areas are multiplied.
Common mistakes
Me: AB = BA, obviously
Matrices: we don't do that here.
