Rational Functions and their Graphs

A rational function y=P(x)Q(x)y=\frac{P(x)}{Q(x)} has vertical asymptotes where Q(x)=0Q(x)=0, and its behaviour for large ∣x∣|x| (horizontal or oblique asymptote) comes from dividing. Writing y=f(x)y=f(x) as a quadratic in xx and using the discriminant gives the range and turning points.

Learning objectives

  • Find vertical, horizontal and oblique asymptotes.
  • Sketch rational functions with all key features.
  • Use the discriminant to find the range and turning points.
Pause and think

What happens to y=2x+1x−3y=\dfrac{2x+1}{x-3} when xx is a million?

Section 2 of 14

Core idea

Start hereA curve that runs from a wall

Graph y=2x+1x−3y=\frac{2x+1}{x-3} and it shoots up near x=3x=3 like a wall it can't touch, while far away it flattens out at height 2. Those invisible guides, asymptotes, are what you find first when sketching any rational function.

The big idea

Vertical asymptotes where the denominator is zero; long-run behaviour from division (horizontal or oblique asymptote); the range from the discriminant of y=f(x)y=f(x) treated as an equation in xx.

1. Asymptotes

Horizontal asymptote of ax+bcx+d\frac{ax+b}{cx+d}
  1. y=a+bxc+dxy=\frac{a+\frac bx}{c+\frac dx}
    Divide top and bottom by xx.
  2. →ac as ∣x∣→∞\to\frac ac\text{ as }|x|\to\infty
    bx,dx→0\frac bx,\frac dx\to0.
Worked exampleOblique asymptote

Find the asymptotes of y=x2+3x+4x+1y=\frac{x^2+3x+4}{x+1}.

Goal
All asymptotes.
Strategy
Denominator zero; polynomial division.
  1. x=−1x=-1
    Vertical.
  2. x2+3x+4=(x+1)(x+2)+2x^2+3x+4=(x+1)(x+2)+2
    Divide.
  3. y=x+2+2x+1y=x+2+\frac2{x+1}
    Remainder term →0\to0.
Answerx=−1x=-1 and y=x+2y=x+2.
✓ Checkx=100x=100: y=10304101=102.02≈102y=\frac{10304}{101}=102.02\approx102 ✓.

2. Range and turning points

Discriminant method
  1. y=x2−5x−3⇒yx−3y=x2−5y=\frac{x^2-5}{x-3}\Rightarrow yx-3y=x^2-5
    Multiply out.
  2. x2−yx+(3y−5)=0x^2-yx+(3y-5)=0
    Quadratic in xx.
  3. y2−4(3y−5)≥0y^2-4(3y-5)\ge0
    Real xx exists only if the discriminant is ≥0\ge0.
  4. (y−2)(y−10)≥0⇒y≤2 or y≥10(y-2)(y-10)\ge0\Rightarrow y\le2\text{ or }y\ge10
    Solve in yy.
The boundary values 22 and 1010 are the yy-coordinates of the turning points.
Worked exampleGreatest value of xx2+1\frac x{x^2+1}

Find the range.

Goal
Range.
Strategy
Discriminant.
  1. yx2−x+y=0yx^2-x+y=0
    Rearrange.
  2. 1−4y2≥01-4y^2\ge0

  3. −12≤y≤12-\tfrac12\le y\le\tfrac12
    Solve.
AnswerRange [−12,12][-\frac12,\frac12]; greatest value 12\frac12 at x=1x=1.
✓ Check11+1=12\frac1{1+1}=\frac12 ✓.
Sketching checklist

Each feature usually earns a mark.

Edge caseCrossing a horizontal asymptote Allowed: y=xx2+1y=\frac x{x^2+1} crosses y=0y=0 at the origin.

Summary

  • Vertical: denominator zero.
  • Divide for long-run behaviour.
  • Discriminant gives range.
Key words
Oblique asymptote
A slanted line approached for large |x|.
HistoryAsymptote. The word comes from Greek "not falling together". Apollonius used it around 200 BC for the lines a hyperbola approaches but never meets.
Fun factCrossing an asymptote. Graphs can cross horizontal or oblique asymptotes (often in the middle). They just can't cross vertical ones, because the function isn't defined there.

Key formulae

Linear over lineary=ax+bcx+d:x=−dc,y=acy=\frac{ax+b}{cx+d}:\quad x=-\frac dc,\quad y=\frac ac
Oblique asymptotex2+px+qx+r=x+m+kx+r ⇒ y=x+m\frac{x^2+px+q}{x+r}=x+m+\frac{k}{x+r}\ \Rightarrow\ y=x+m

TrickTest just beside each asymptote. Plug in x=3.01x=3.01 and x=2.99x=2.99 (for an asymptote at x=3x=3). The signs tell you which way the graph shoots off on each side.

      1. Move dd: the vertical asymptote is at x=−dx=-d.
      2. Move aa: the horizontal asymptote is y=ay=a.
      3. For which bb does the curve collapse to a straight line? (When b=adb=ad.)

      y=ax+bx+dy=\frac{ax+b}{x+d} has asymptotes x=−dx=-d and y=ay=a.

      Common mistakes

      IncorrectHorizontal asymptote y=bdy=\frac bd
      Correcty=acy=\frac ac
      For large xx only the leading terms matter.
      IncorrectGraph crossing a vertical asymptote
      CorrectIt can't
      The function is undefined there.
      IncorrectSolving B2−4AC≥0B^2-4AC\ge0 for xx
      CorrectIt's an inequality in yy
      You need the yy-values for which some real xx exists.
