Pythagoras' Theorem
In a right-angled triangle, the square on the hypotenuse equals the sum of the squares on the other two sides: . Add the squares to find the hypotenuse; subtract to find a shorter side.
Learning objectives
- Identify the hypotenuse as the side opposite the right angle.
- Find the hypotenuse, or a shorter side, of a right-angled triangle.
- Use Pythagoras in practical problems and to find the distance between two points.
- Test whether a triangle is right-angled.
Draw squares on each side of a -- triangle. What are their areas, and what do you notice?
Core idea
A 5 m ladder leans against a wall with its foot 1.5 m out. How high does it reach? The wall, ground and ladder make a right-angled triangle, and Pythagoras links its three sides.
