Stem-and-Leaf Diagrams and Box Plots

Two ways to see a whole data set at a glance. A stem-and-leaf diagram keeps every value; a box plot squeezes the data into five numbers that show its centre, its spread and its shape.

Learning objectives

  • Draw and read stem-and-leaf diagrams, including back-to-back ones with a key.
  • Find the median, lower and upper quartiles and the interquartile range.
  • Draw and interpret box-and-whisker plots, and identify outliers.
  • Describe skew and compare two data sets using an average and a measure of spread.
Pause and think

Two classes took the same test. Class A's marks were all between 5050 and 7070; class B's ranged from 1010 to 100100. Both had a median of 6060. Are the classes really "the same"?

Section 2 of 14

Core idea

Start hereThirteen scores, one glance

A teacher has 1313 test scores: 12,15,18,21,23,23,26,28,30,34,35,41,4712,15,18,21,23,23,26,28,30,34,35,41,47. A list hides the story. Is the class bunched together or spread out? Are there stragglers? A good diagram answers in a second. Stem-and-leaf diagrams keep every value; box plots boil the data down to five numbers.

The big idea

A stem-and-leaf diagram orders the data and shows its shape. The median splits ordered data in half; the quartiles split each half again. A box plot draws min, Q1Q_1, median, Q3Q_3, max; outliers are usually beyond 1.5×1.5\timesIQR from the quartiles.

1. Stem-and-leaf diagrams

Stem-and-leaf diagram of 13 test scores
12 5 821 3 3 6 830 4 541 7stems = tensleaves = units, in orderKey: 2 | 1 means 21
The data: 12,15,18,21,23,23,26,28,30,34,35,41,4712, 15, 18, 21, 23, 23, 26, 28, 30, 34, 35, 41, 47. The longest row (the 20s) shows where most values are.
  • Stem = tens, leaf = units (here). Leaves in increasing order.
  • Always give a key, e.g. 2∣32\mid3 means 2323.
  • Back-to-back diagrams compare two groups on a shared stem.

2. Median and quartiles

Summary

  • Stem-and-leaf with key.
  • Median n+12\frac{n+1}2; quartiles from halves.
  • Outliers beyond 1.5×1.5\timesIQR.
Key words
IQR
Q3−Q1Q_3-Q_1.
Skew
Asymmetry; direction of the long tail.
Outlier
A value unusually far from the rest.
HistoryTukey's doodles. The American statistician John Tukey invented both the box plot (around 1970) and the stem-and-leaf diagram, and promoted them in his 1977 book Exploratory Data Analysis. He wanted quick pencil-and-paper pictures that let you "look at the data" before calculating anything.
Fun factTukey named the bit. The same John Tukey coined the word "bit" (binary digit) in 1947, and is credited with the first printed use of "software" in 1958. A good word, like a good diagram, makes an idea easy to use.

Key formulae

Median positionmedian=(n+12)th value\text{median}=\left(\tfrac{n+1}{2}\right)\text{th value}
Interquartile rangeIQR=Q3−Q1\text{IQR}=Q_3-Q_1
A common outlier rulex<Q1−1.5×IQRorx>Q3+1.5×IQRx<Q_1-1.5\times\text{IQR}\quad\text{or}\quad x>Q_3+1.5\times\text{IQR}
  • Positive skew: the median is nearer Q1Q_1 and the upper whisker is long (a tail of high values).
  • Negative skew: the median is nearer Q3Q_3 and the lower whisker is long.
  • Symmetrical: the median is in the middle of the box and the whiskers are similar.
TrickCount leaves, not stems. In a stem-and-leaf diagram, write a running total of leaves at the end of each row. Then the 88th value, say, is easy to find: go to the row whose running total first reaches 88. In a back-to-back diagram, remember the left-hand leaves increase from right to left.

The box holds the middle half of the data; its width is the IQR.

In the real worldBox plots in medicine. Medical researchers use side-by-side box plots to compare, say, blood pressure in a treatment group and a control group. Medians show which group did better on average, and the boxes show whether the improvement was consistent or driven by a few patients.

        Exam tip

Exam tipCompare in context. When asked to compare two distributions, write two sentences: one about location ("on average, the boys' times were longer, since their median is higher") and one about spread ("the girls' times were more consistent, since their IQR is smaller"). Use the context of the question, not just "A is bigger".
