Constant Acceleration Formulae (suvat)

Five letters, five formulas. Write down ss, uu, vv, aa, tt, fill in the three you know and the one you want, then pick the formula without the letter you don't need. Every formula assumes the acceleration is constant.

Learning objectives

  • List s,u,v,a,ts,u,v,a,t and choose the right formula.
  • Handle decelerations with a negative aa.
  • Solve journeys in several stages.
  • Solve problems where two objects meet or overtake.
Pause and think

A car goes from 1010 to 2020 m s⁻¹ in 55 s at a steady rate. Its average speed must be?

Section 2 of 14

Core idea

Start hereStopping distance

A train at 20 m s−1^{-1} needs to stop at a platform 400 m away. How hard must it brake, and how long will it take? Five variables, s,u,v,a,ts,u,v,a,t, linked by five equations: know three, find the rest.

The big idea

Constant acceleration only: v=u+atv=u+at, s=12(u+v)ts=\frac12(u+v)t, s=ut+12at2s=ut+\frac12at^2, s=vt−12at2s=vt-\frac12at^2, v2=u2+2asv^2=u^2+2as.

1. Deriving from the v–t graph

v–t graph: gradient a, area s
246851015200t (s)v (m/s)v = u + ats
u=3u=3, a=2a=2. The area is a trapezium: s=12(u+v)ts=\tfrac12(u+v)t. Substituting v=u+atv=u+at gives s=ut+12at2s=ut+\tfrac12at^2.
All five from a straight-line graph
  1. a=v−ut⇒v=u+ata=\frac{v-u}t\Rightarrow v=u+at
    Gradient of the line.
  2. s=12(u+v)ts=\tfrac12(u+v)t
    Area of the trapezium.
  3. s=12(u+u+at)t=ut+12at2s=\tfrac12(u+u+at)t=ut+\tfrac12at^2
    Substitute vv.
  4. s=vt−12at2s=vt-\tfrac12at^2
    Substitute u=v−atu=v-at instead.
  5. s=12(u+v)⋅v−ua⇒v2=u2+2ass=\tfrac12(u+v)\cdot\frac{v-u}a\Rightarrow v^2=u^2+2as
    Eliminate tt; difference of squares.
v2=u2+2asv^2=u^2+2as
where
ss
displacement (m).
u,vu,v
initial, final velocity (m s⁻¹).
aa
acceleration (m s⁻²).
tt
time (s).

2. Examples

Worked exampleThe train

From 20 m s−1^{-1} to rest in 400 m. Deceleration and time?

Goal
aa, tt.
Strategy
Known u,v,su,v,s: use v2=u2+2asv^2=u^2+2as, then v=u+atv=u+at.
  1. 0=400+800a⇒a=−0.50=400+800a\Rightarrow a=-0.5
    v2=u2+2asv^2=u^2+2as.
  2. 0=20−0.5t⇒t=400=20-0.5t\Rightarrow t=40
    v=u+atv=u+at.
AnswerDeceleration 0.50.5 m s−2^{-2}; 4040 s.
✓ Checks=12(20+0)(40)=400s=\frac12(20+0)(40)=400 ✓.
Worked exampleCatching up

A passes P at a constant 12 m s−1^{-1}. 5 s later B leaves P from rest with a=3a=3. When does B catch A?

Goal
tt.
Strategy
Write both positions in terms of A's time tt; set equal.
  1. sA=12t,sB=12(3)(t−5)2s_A=12t,\quad s_B=\tfrac12(3)(t-5)^2
    B has been moving for t−5t-5 s.
  2. 1.5(t−5)2=12t⇒t2−18t+25=01.5(t-5)^2=12t\Rightarrow t^2-18t+25=0
    Expand, divide by 1.5.
  3. t=9±56t=9\pm\sqrt{56}
    Formula.
  4. t=16.5 st=16.5\text{ s}
    9−56=1.5<59-\sqrt{56}=1.5<5: before B starts, reject.
Answer16.516.5 s after A passes P.
✓ ChecksA=198s_A=198; sB=1.5(11.48)2=198s_B=1.5(11.48)^2=198 ✓.
Common misconceptionNon-constant acceleration suvat is only valid if aa is constant throughout the stage. Split journeys into stages.
Pause and think

From 5 m s−1^{-1} with a=2a=2, distance in 4 s?

Summary

  • Five equations; pick by the missing variable.
  • Constant acceleration only.
Key words
suvat
Constant-acceleration equations.
HistoryGalileo's ramps. Around 1604 Galileo rolled balls down gently sloping ramps and timed them with a water clock. He found distance grows with the square of time, s∝t2s\propto t^2, the first experimental evidence for s=12at2s=\tfrac12at^2.
Fun factCheetahs versus sports cars. A cheetah can reach about 2525 m s⁻¹ in around 33 s, an average acceleration of roughly 88 m s⁻², comparable to a supercar. But it can only keep up its top speed for a few hundred metres.

Key formulae

No sv=u+atv=u+at
No as=12(u+v)ts=\tfrac12(u+v)t
No vs=ut+12at2s=ut+\tfrac12at^2
No us=vt−12at2s=vt-\tfrac12at^2
No tv2=u2+2asv^2=u^2+2as
TrickWrite the suvat list every time. Start every question with a five-line list: s= s=\ , u= u=\ , v= v=\ , a= a=\ , t= t=\ . Fill in what you know, put a ? by what you want and a ✗ by what you don't care about. The ✗ chooses the formula for you.

Worked examples

Example 1 · Braking distance0 / 2 steps
A cyclist at 2020 m s⁻¹ decelerates at 2.52.5 m s⁻² until she stops. How far does she travel?
    Example 2 · Catching up0 / 2 steps
    Car AA starts from rest with a=2a=2 m s⁻². Car BB is 2424 m ahead, moving at a steady 55 m s⁻¹. When does AA catch BB?

      Explore the graph

      Velocity–time line and its area
      Loading the interactive graph…
      Try this
      1. The line is v=u+atv=u+at for 55 s; the shaded area is the displacement. The value is s=5u+12a(25)s=5u+\tfrac12a(25).
      2. Check: with u=4u=4, a=2a=2 the area is a trapezium with parallel sides 44 and 1414.
      3. Make aa negative. What does the graph mean when it goes below the axis?

      s=ut+12at2s=ut+\tfrac12at^2 is just the area under the velocity–time line.

      In the real worldSpeed humps and stopping distances. The Highway Code's stopping distances (for example, about 2323 m at 3030 mph) come from reaction distance plus a braking distance calculated with v2=u2+2asv^2=u^2+2as.

      Common mistakes

      IncorrectDeceleration 2.52.5 used as a=+2.5a=+2.5
      Correcta=−2.5a=-2.5
      It acts against the motion.
      Incorrects=12at2s=\tfrac12at^2 when u≠0u\ne0

      IncorrectMixing km h⁻¹ and m
      CorrectConvert to m s⁻¹
      SI units throughout.
      IncorrectUsing suvat when acceleration changes
      CorrectSplit into stages
      Each stage needs constant aa.
      1. Use v=u+atv=u+at for everything

      2. Write down s,u,v,a,ts, u, v, a, t

      3. Find the variable you don't know and don't need, pick the equation without it

      Exam tip

      Exam tipState the formula. Write the formula before substituting (e.g. "v2=u2+2asv^2=u^2+2as"). A correct formula with correct values is the M1; a slip later only costs the A1.
