First-Order Linear Differential Equations
An equation can't usually be separated. Multiply through by the integrating factor : the left side becomes , exactly the derivative of a product, so one integration solves it.
Learning objectives
- Recognise first-order linear equations.
- Find the integrating factor .
- Find general and particular solutions.
What is , if is a function of ?
Core idea
Salt water pours into a tank while the mixture drains out. The amount of salt changes at a rate that depends on how much is already there and on time. You can't separate the variables. But multiply the equation by one clever function and it collapses into a single derivative you can integrate.
Write . Multiply by ; the left side becomes . Integrate: .
1. Why the integrating factor works
- Multiply the equation by some function .
- Product rule: we want the left side to equal this.
- Match the terms.
- Separate and integrate (no constant needed).
- Integrate both sides.
