Inference with the t-Distribution
For a small sample from a normal population with unknown variance, follows a -distribution with degrees of freedom. It has heavier tails than , so intervals are wider: .
Learning objectives
- Know when to use rather than .
- Find confidence intervals using .
- Carry out one-sample and paired -tests.
With only 5 measurements, why is the sample standard deviation an unreliable stand-in for ?
Core idea
At the Guinness brewery in 1908, William Gosset had only a handful of barley samples. Using the normal distribution with his estimated standard deviation gave intervals that were too narrow. His fix, the t-distribution, is now used everywhere small samples are.
Replacing by the estimate adds uncertainty. For a normal population, , which has heavier tails than , giving wider intervals and stricter tests.
