Stem-and-Leaf Diagrams and Box Plots
Two ways to see a whole data set at a glance. A stem-and-leaf diagram keeps every value; a box plot squeezes the data into five numbers that show its centre, its spread and its shape.
Learning objectives
- Draw and read stem-and-leaf diagrams, including back-to-back ones with a key.
- Find the median, lower and upper quartiles and the interquartile range.
- Draw and interpret box-and-whisker plots, and identify outliers.
- Describe skew and compare two data sets using an average and a measure of spread.
Two classes took the same test. Class A's marks were all between and ; class B's ranged from to . Both had a median of . Are the classes really "the same"?
Core idea
A teacher has test scores: . A list hides the story. Is the class bunched together or spread out? Are there stragglers? A good diagram answers in a second. Stem-and-leaf diagrams keep every value; box plots boil the data down to five numbers.
A stem-and-leaf diagram orders the data and shows its shape. The median splits ordered data in half; the quartiles split each half again. A box plot draws min, , median, , max; outliers are usually beyond IQR from the quartiles.
1. Stem-and-leaf diagrams
- Stem = tens, leaf = units (here). Leaves in increasing order.
- Always give a key, e.g. means .
- Back-to-back diagrams compare two groups on a shared stem.
2. Median and quartiles
- where
- number of values.
- ,
- lower and upper quartiles: medians of the lower and upper halves.
Find the median, quartiles and IQR.
- Goal
- Five-number summary.
- Strategy
- Median first, then medians of each half (excluding the median when is odd).
- .
- Lower half.
- Upper half.
- Spread of the middle half.
3. Box plots, outliers and skew
Are there any outliers in the 13 scores?
- Goal
- Yes/no.
- Strategy
- Fences at IQR and IQR.
- Fence distance.
- Fences.
- Positive skew: long right tail; median nearer .
- Negative skew: long left tail; median nearer .
- Symmetric: median central.
Median of ?
Summary
- Stem-and-leaf with key.
- Median ; quartiles from halves.
- Outliers beyond IQR.
- IQR
- .
- Skew
- Asymmetry; direction of the long tail.
- Outlier
- A value unusually far from the rest.
Key formulae
- Positive skew: the median is nearer and the upper whisker is long (a tail of high values).
- Negative skew: the median is nearer and the lower whisker is long.
- Symmetrical: the median is in the middle of the box and the whiskers are similar.
Worked examples
Explore the graph
- The sliders are the five-number summary: minimum , , median , , maximum .
- Make the plot positively skewed: median close to , long right whisker.
- Using the IQR rule, how large can be before the maximum counts as an outlier?
The box holds the middle half of the data; its width is the IQR.
Common mistakes
the median is right here
so it's halfway along the box?
absolutely not

Summary
- Stem-and-leaf: ordered, keeps raw values, needs a key.
- Median at position ; quartiles are the medians of each half.
- Box plot: min, , median, , max; outliers plotted separately.
- Skew: the long tail tells you the direction.
- Compare with an average and a spread, in context.
