Learning objectives
Integrate eax+b, ax+b1, sin(ax+b), cos(ax+b) and sec2(ax+b).
Explain why ∫x1dx=ln∣x∣+c.
Rewrite expressions (splitting fractions, expanding brackets) before integrating.
Check answers by differentiating.
Pause and think
In Pure 1 the rule ∫xndx=n+1xn+1 failed for n=−1. Which function has derivative x1?

Core idea
Start hereThe missing power
The power rule integrates every xn... except x−1, which would give 0x0. So what is ∫x1dx? The area under y=x1 from 1 to b turns out to be exactly lnb. Reversing the new derivatives gives a whole family of standard integrals.
The big idea
∫exdx=ex+c; ∫x1dx=ln∣x∣+c; ∫cosxdx=sinx+c; ∫sinxdx=−cosx+c; ∫sec2xdx=tanx+c. With ax+b inside, divide by a. ∫f(x)f′(x)dx=ln∣f(x)∣+c.
1. The table
Area under y = 1/x from 1 to b is ln bWhen b=e≈2.72 the area is exactly 1. The area keeps growing as b grows, but ever more slowly, just like lnb.
📌 Key takeawayWhy ∣x∣For x<0, dxdln(−x)=−x−1=x1 too. So ln∣x∣ covers both signs.

📜 HistoryLogs of negative numbers. In 1712 Leibniz and Johann Bernoulli argued in letters about whether ln(−1) exists. Bernoulli said ln(−x)=lnx, since both have derivative x1. Euler finally sorted it out decades later. For integrating with real numbers, we write ln∣x∣.
