Functions
A function is a rule turning an input into an output. A composite means "do , then ". The inverse undoes : swap and and rearrange. Some inputs can't be used, such as values that make you divide by zero.
Learning objectives
- Use function notation to evaluate and solve.
- Form and evaluate composite functions such as and .
- Find an inverse function .
- Identify values that must be excluded from the domain.
A machine doubles a number, then adds . It outputs . What went in? How did you work it out?
Core idea
Think of a function as a machine: drop in a number, it does something fixed (double it, add 3), and out comes the answer. Run it backwards and you get the inverse; feed one machine into another and you get a composite.
: put in 3. reverses . : first, then .
1. Evaluating and inverses
and .
- Goal
- Value; inverse.
- Strategy
- Swap the roles: solve for .
- Substitute.
- Undo: subtract 3, halve.
- Rename the input .
2. Composite functions
, , .
- Goal
- Composites.
- Strategy
- Inner function first.
- Square first.
- Double-add first.
- Evaluate.
. Find .
Summary
- Inverse: rearrange.
- : first.

- Reverses a function.
- Composite function
- Function of a function.
