Chi-squared Tests
Compare observed frequencies with those expected under , , using . Large values mean poor fit. Compare with where number of classes parameters estimated, or for a contingency table. Expected frequencies should be at least .
Learning objectives
- Calculate expected frequencies and the statistic.
- Find degrees of freedom and use tables.
- Carry out goodness-of-fit and contingency-table tests.
A die gives sixes 14 times in 60 rolls instead of 10. Biased?
Core idea
Roll a die 60 times and you won't get exactly ten of each face. Some wobble is just chance. A chi-squared test adds up all the mismatches between what you saw and what a fair die should give, and asks whether the total is too big to blame on luck.
measures total mismatch. Under it approximately follows . Large means poor fit, so the test is upper-tailed.
1. Goodness of fit
60 rolls: . Test at 5% whether the die is fair.

- Sum of .
- Six classes, total fixed.
- Critical value.
- Start with the number of cells after combining.
- Expected totals are forced to match the observed total.
- Subtract one for each parameter estimated from the data (e.g. , or and ).
2. Contingency tables

- Strategy
- Independence: .
- Expected under independence.
- Same as .
- Free cells once totals are fixed.
The same steps every time.
