Hyperbolic Functions

sinh⁡x=ex−e−x2\sinh x=\frac{e^x-e^{-x}}2, cosh⁡x=ex+e−x2\cosh x=\frac{e^x+e^{-x}}2, tanh⁡x=sinh⁡xcosh⁡x\tanh x=\frac{\sinh x}{\cosh x}. They obey identities like trig ones (cosh⁡2x−sinh⁡2x=1\cosh^2x-\sinh^2x=1), and their inverses are logarithms, e.g. arsinh⁡x=ln⁡(x+x2+1)\operatorname{arsinh}x=\ln\left(x+\sqrt{x^2+1}\right).

Learning objectives

  • Define and sketch sinh⁡\sinh, cosh⁡\cosh, tanh⁡\tanh.
  • Prove and use hyperbolic identities (Osborn's rule).
  • Express inverse hyperbolic functions as logarithms.
  • Solve equations involving hyperbolic functions.
Pause and think

A chain hanging between two posts makes a curve. Is it a parabola?

Section 2 of 14

Core idea

Start hereThe shape of a hanging chain

Hang a necklace from two fingers. Galileo thought the curve was a parabola; he was wrong. It's a catenary, y=cosh⁡xy=\cosh x, built from exponentials. Its relatives sinh⁡\sinh and tanh⁡\tanh behave uncannily like sine and tangent, but for a hyperbola instead of a circle.

The big idea

sinh⁡x=ex−e−x2\sinh x=\frac{e^x-e^{-x}}2, cosh⁡x=ex+e−x2\cosh x=\frac{e^x+e^{-x}}2, tanh⁡x=sinh⁡xcosh⁡x\tanh x=\frac{\sinh x}{\cosh x}. Identities: cosh⁡2x−sinh⁡2x=1\cosh^2x-\sinh^2x=1 (Osborn's rule). Inverses are logarithms.

1. Definitions and identities

cosh⁡2x−sinh⁡2x=1\cosh^2x-\sinh^2x=1
  1. cosh⁡2x=14(e2x+2+e−2x)\cosh^2x=\tfrac14(e^{2x}+2+e^{-2x})
    Square the definition.
  2. sinh⁡2x=14(e2x−2+e−2x)\sinh^2x=\tfrac14(e^{2x}-2+e^{-2x})
    Likewise.
  3. cosh⁡2x−sinh⁡2x=14(4)=1\cosh^2x-\sinh^2x=\tfrac14(4)=1
    Subtract: the exponentials cancel.
So (cosh⁡t,sinh⁡t)(\cosh t,\sinh t) lies on the hyperbola x2−y2=1x^2-y^2=1, hence the name.
TrickOsborn's rule Take any trig identity, swap to hyperbolic functions, and flip the sign of every product of two sines: cos⁡2x=1−2sin⁡2x\cos2x=1-2\sin^2x becomes cosh⁡2x=1+2sinh⁡2x\cosh2x=1+2\sinh^2x.

2. Inverse functions

arsinh⁡x=ln⁡(x+x2+1)\operatorname{arsinh}x=\ln(x+\sqrt{x^2+1})
  1. y=arsinh⁡x⇒x=sinh⁡y=ey−e−y2y=\operatorname{arsinh}x\Rightarrow x=\sinh y=\frac{e^y-e^{-y}}2
    Definition of the inverse.
  2. e2y−2xey−1=0e^{2y}-2xe^y-1=0

  3. ey=x±x2+1e^y=x\pm\sqrt{x^2+1}
    Quadratic formula in eye^y.
  4. ey=x+x2+1e^y=x+\sqrt{x^2+1}
    x−x2+1<0x-\sqrt{x^2+1}<0, but ey>0e^y>0.
  5. y=ln⁡(x+x2+1)y=\ln\left(x+\sqrt{x^2+1}\right)
    Take logs.
arcosh⁡x=ln⁡(x+x2−1) (x≥1),artanh⁡x=12ln⁡1+x1−x (∣x∣<1)\operatorname{arcosh}x=\ln\left(x+\sqrt{x^2-1}\right)\ (x\ge1),\qquad\operatorname{artanh}x=\tfrac12\ln\frac{1+x}{1-x}\ (|x|<1)

HistoryLambert and Riccati. Vincenzo Riccati and Johann Lambert developed hyperbolic functions in the 1760s, calling them "hyperbolic" because (cosh⁡t,sinh⁡t)(\cosh t,\sinh t) traces the hyperbola x2−y2=1x^2-y^2=1.
Fun factThe Gateway Arch. The 192 m St Louis arch is an inverted (weighted) catenary, a hyperbolic cosine curve, chosen so that the stresses run along the arch.
