The Parabola and Rectangular Hyperbola
The parabola is every point equidistant from the focus and the directrix ; parametrically . The rectangular hyperbola has parametric form . Parameters make tangents and normals tidy.
Learning objectives
- Use the focus–directrix property of .
- Use the parametric forms and .
- Find equations of tangents and normals.
Why are car headlight reflectors and satellite dishes parabolic?
Core idea
A satellite dish catches weak signals arriving in parallel and sends every one of them to a single receiver. Only one shape can do that: the parabola. Its secret is a simple distance rule, and that rule gives us its equation.
A parabola is every point that is the same distance from a fixed point (the focus) and a fixed line (the directrix). With focus and directrix this gives , which we can trace with the parameter .
1. From the distance rule to the equation
- Distance from to the focus .
- Horizontal distance from to the line .
- Set and square both sides.
- Expand both brackets.
- Cancel and ; collect the terms.
- where
- distance from the vertex to the focus.
- the parameter; each value gives one point.
2. Gradients without square roots
- Differentiate each coordinate.
- Chain rule: divide the two rates.
- Point–gradient form.
- Multiply by and tidy.

Worked examples
Explore the graph
- The point is from the focus and from the directrix.
- Move and check the two distances stay equal.
Distance to focus = distance to directrix.
