The Ellipse and Hyperbola
is an ellipse with ; is a hyperbola with . Both have foci and directrices ; distance to a focus is times distance to the matching directrix.
Learning objectives
- Find eccentricity, foci and directrices.
- Use parametric forms and .
- Find tangents and normals; know the hyperbola's asymptotes.
Pin two ends of a loop of string to a board and pull a pencil round it. What shape do you draw?
Core idea
Push two pins into a board, loop string round them and pull it tight with a pencil. As you draw, the two distances to the pins always add to the length of string. The curve is an ellipse, and the same idea with a difference of distances gives a hyperbola.
Every conic has distance to focus distance to directrix. For you get the ellipse with ; for the hyperbola with .
1. Finding the foci
- with focus and directrix .
- Expand: the terms match.
- Collect terms.
- Divide by .
- where
- eccentricity.
- semi-major axis (ellipse) or half the vertex distance (hyperbola).
For find , the foci and the directrices.
- Goal
- Three facts.
- Strategy
- Use .
- Read off the denominators.
- Substitute.
- Compute.
2. Parameters, tangents and asymptotes
- where
- parameter (not the polar angle of the point).
- Differentiate implicitly.
- Rearrange at the point.
- Line through , multiplied out.
- The point lies on the ellipse.
Find the asymptotes of .
- Goal
- Two lines.
- Strategy
- For large the is negligible.
- Ignore the far from the origin.
- Square root.
The eccentricity alone decides the type of conic.

Summary
- Ellipse ; hyperbola .
- Foci ; directrices .
- Tangent: replace , .
- Asymptotes .
- Eccentricity
- Ratio of distance to focus over distance to directrix.
- Asymptote
- Line a curve approaches but never reaches.
Also on your syllabus
- Normals: the normal at a point is perpendicular to the tangent there, so its gradient is where is the tangent gradient, found by implicit or parametric differentiation.
