First-Order Linear Differential Equations

An equation dydx+P(x)y=Q(x)\frac{dy}{dx}+P(x)y=Q(x) can't usually be separated. Multiply through by the integrating factor I=e∫P dxI=e^{\int P\,dx}: the left side becomes ddx(Iy)\frac{d}{dx}(Iy), exactly the derivative of a product, so one integration solves it.

Core idea

Start hereA tank that fills and leaks

Salt water pours into a tank while the mixture drains out. The amount of salt changes at a rate that depends on how much is already there and on time. You can't separate the variables. But multiply the equation by one clever function and it collapses into a single derivative you can integrate.

The big idea

Write dydx+P(x)y=Q(x)\frac{dy}{dx}+P(x)y=Q(x). Multiply by I=e∫P dxI=e^{\int P\,dx}; the left side becomes ddx(Iy)\frac{d}{dx}(Iy). Integrate: Iy=∫IQ dx+cIy=\int IQ\,dx+c.

1. Why the integrating factor works

Making a product rule appear
  1. Idydx+IPy=IQI\frac{dy}{dx}+IPy=IQ
    Multiply the equation by some function I(x)I(x).
  2. ddx(Iy)=Idydx+dIdxy\frac{d}{dx}(Iy)=I\frac{dy}{dx}+\frac{dI}{dx}y
    Product rule: we want the left side to equal this.
  3. dIdx=IP\frac{dI}{dx}=IP
    Match the yy terms.
  4. ln⁡I=∫P dx⇒I=e∫P dx\ln I=\int P\,dx\Rightarrow I=e^{\int P\,dx}
    Separate and integrate (no constant needed).
  5. ddx(Iy)=IQ⇒Iy=∫IQ dx+c\frac{d}{dx}(Iy)=IQ\Rightarrow Iy=\int IQ\,dx+c
    Integrate both sides.
I(x)=e∫P(x) dxI(x)=e^{\int P(x)\,dx}
where
P(x)P(x)
coefficient of yy once dydx\frac{dy}{dx} has coefficient 11.
Q(x)Q(x)
the right-hand side.

    Integrating factor (x>0x>0).
  2. ddx(xy)=3x2\frac{d}{dx}(xy)=3x^2
    Multiply through by xx.
  3. xy=x3+cxy=x^3+c
    Integrate.
  4. 2=1+c⇒c=12=1+c\Rightarrow c=1
    Condition.
Answery=x2+1xy=x^2+\frac1x.

Worked exampleDividing first

Goal

Strategy
Standard form: divide by cos⁡x\cos x.
  1. dydx+ytan⁡x=cos⁡x\frac{dy}{dx}+y\tan x=\cos x
    Coefficient of y′y' now 11.
  2. I=e∫tan⁡x dx=eln⁡sec⁡x=sec⁡xI=e^{\int\tan x\,dx}=e^{\ln\sec x}=\sec x
    ∫tan⁡x=ln⁡sec⁡x\int\tan x=\ln\sec x.
  3. ddx(ysec⁡x)=1⇒ysec⁡x=x+c\frac{d}{dx}(y\sec x)=1\Rightarrow y\sec x=x+c
    sec⁡xcos⁡x=1\sec x\cos x=1.
  4. c=2⇒y=(x+2)cos⁡xc=2\Rightarrow y=(x+2)\cos x
    Condition.
Answery=(x+2)cos⁡xy=(x+2)\cos x.
✓ Checky(0)=2y(0)=2 ✓.
Common misconceptionConstant placement Add cc before dividing by II: y=∫IQ dx+cIy=\frac{\int IQ\,dx+c}{I}, so cc gets divided too.
Edge caseSeparable too? If Q=0Q=0 the equation is also separable; both methods agree.
Pause and think

Summary

  • Standard form first.
  • I=e∫P dxI=e^{\int P\,dx}.
  • ddx(Iy)=IQ\frac{d}{dx}(Iy)=IQ; integrate; add cc; divide.
Key words
Integrating factor
Multiplier turning the left side into an exact derivative.
Particular solution
Solution fitting given conditions.
HistoryLeibniz and the Bernoullis. Gottfried Leibniz found the integrating factor method in the 1690s, while the Bernoulli brothers raced to solve related equations.
Fun factCooling coffee with a heater. Newton's law of cooling with a changing room temperature is a first-order linear equation, solved by an integrating factor.

Key formulae

Standard formdydx+P(x)y=Q(x)\frac{dy}{dx}+P(x)y=Q(x)
Integrating factorI(x)=e∫P(x) dxI(x)=e^{\int P(x)\,dx}
SolutionI y=∫I Q dxI\,y=\int I\,Q\,dx
TrickDivide first. If the equation starts xdydx+…x\frac{dy}{dx}+\ldots, divide by xx so the coefficient of dydx\frac{dy}{dx} is 11 before finding PP.

      Common mistakes

      IncorrectUsing PP before dividing by the coefficient of y′y'
