  1. Inverse trig and hyperbolic functions in calculus

Differentiating y=arcsin⁡xy=\arcsin x implicitly gives 11−x2\frac1{\sqrt{1-x^2}}; similar results hold for arctan⁡\arctan, arsinh⁡\operatorname{arsinh}, arcosh⁡\operatorname{arcosh}. Read backwards, these give the integrals of 1a2−x2\frac1{\sqrt{a^2-x^2}}, 1a2+x2\frac1{a^2+x^2} and 1x2±a2\frac1{\sqrt{x^2\pm a^2}}, which algebra alone can't do.

  2. Reduction formulae, arc length and surface area

A reduction formula links In=∫fnI_n=\int f_n to In−1I_{n-1} or In−2I_{n-2} (usually by parts), so you climb from an easy I0I_0 to any InI_n. The length of a curve is ∫1+(dydx)2dx\int\sqrt{1+\left(\frac{dy}{dx}\right)^2}dx and the surface it sweeps out is 2π∫y ds2\pi\int y\,ds.
