Homeostasis and the Kidney

Homeostasis keeps internal conditions within narrow limits using negative feedback: a receptor detects a change, a coordinator (e.g. hypothalamus) triggers effectors that reverse it. Thermoregulation: vasodilation, sweating (too hot); vasoconstriction, shivering, raised metabolism (too cold). The liver deaminates excess amino acids, making urea. In the nephron: ultrafiltration in the glomerulus (high hydrostatic pressure; basement membrane and podocytes filter out cells and proteins); selective reabsorption in the proximal convoluted tubule (all glucose, most water and ions; microvilli, many mitochondria, co-transport); the loop of Henle creates a high solute concentration in the medulla (ascending limb pumps out Na⁺/Cl⁻, impermeable to water); the collecting duct reabsorbs water by osmosis. ADH from the posterior pituitary makes collecting-duct cells insert aquaporins, so more water is reabsorbed when blood ψ is low.

Learning objectives

  • Explain negative feedback.
  • Describe thermoregulation.
  • Describe how the nephron forms urine.
  • Explain the role of ADH.
Pause and think

Why is urine more concentrated after a long, hot run?

Section 2 of 14

Core idea

Start hereA constant inside

Outside it may be 40 °C or −10 °C; inside you it stays near 37 °C. Homeostasis does that.

The big idea

Negative feedback keeps conditions near a set point. The kidney filters blood, reabsorbs what's useful, and ADH fine-tunes water loss.

The nephron

Each region has a job.

Worked exampleHow much is reabsorbed?

GFR 125 cm³ min⁻¹; urine 1.5 dm³ day⁻¹. % reabsorbed?

HistoryClaude Bernard. In the 1850s Claude Bernard described the "milieu intérieur", the stable internal environment that homeostasis maintains.
Fun factKangaroo rats. Desert kangaroo rats have very long loops of Henle and almost never drink: they get water from respiring seeds.
