Ecosystems, Energy and Nutrient Cycles

Producers capture light energy: gross primary production (GPP) is the total chemical energy fixed; net primary production NPP=GPP−R\text{NPP}=\text{GPP}-R (respiratory losses) is available to consumers. For consumers, N=I−(F+R)N=I-(F+R) (ingested minus faeces/urine and respiration). Only about 10% passes between trophic levels: energy is lost as heat in respiration, in uneaten parts and in faeces. Farming increases efficiency by reducing respiratory losses (warm, restricted animals) and removing competitors and pests. Nitrogen cycle: nitrogen fixation (Rhizobium in root nodules; lightning), ammonification (saprobionts), nitrification (NH₄⁺ → NO₂⁻ → NO₃⁻, aerobic bacteria), denitrification (anaerobic bacteria → N₂). Phosphorus cycles through rocks, soil and organisms; mycorrhizae aid uptake. Fertilisers that leach cause eutrophication: algal bloom → light blocked → plants die → decomposers use O₂ → fish die. Succession: pioneer species → climax community. Rising CO₂ and methane drive climate change.

Section 1 of 14

Learning objectives

  • Calculate NPP and efficiency of energy transfer.
  • Describe the nitrogen and phosphorus cycles.
  • Explain eutrophication.
  • Describe succession and climate change effects.
Pause and think

Why are food chains rarely longer than four or five links?

Section 2 of 14

Core idea

Start hereWhy there are so few lions

A savanna supports millions of grazers but only a few hundred lions. Energy runs out up the food chain.

The big idea

Energy flows through ecosystems and is lost at each step; nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus cycle and are reused.

The nitrogen cycle

Bacteria drive every step.

Worked exampleEnergy efficiency

GPP 20 000, R 12 000, herbivores gain 800 kJ m⁻² yr⁻¹.

Goal
NPP and efficiency.
Strategy
NPP = GPP − R.
  1. NPP=20 000−12 000=8000\text{NPP}=20\,000-12\,000=8000
    Available to herbivores.
  2. 8008000×100=10%\frac{800}{8000}\times100=10\%
    Transfer efficiency.
AnswerNPP 8000; 10%.

Summary

  • NPP = GPP − R.
  • Nutrient cycles.
  • Eutrophication; succession.
Key words
GPP
Total chemical energy fixed by producers.
Saprobiont
Organism feeding on dead matter by extracellular digestion.
HistoryLindeman's 10% rule. Raymond Lindeman measured energy flow in a Minnesota lake in 1942 and introduced the idea of trophic efficiency.
Fun factNitrogen from the air. The Haber process fixes about as much nitrogen each year as all natural processes combined, feeding about half the world's people.
