Quantities, Units and Evaluating Models
Mechanics works in SI units: metres, kilograms, seconds and the newtons built from them. Convert before you calculate. Some quantities are scalars (size only) and some are vectors (size and direction). Once a model gives an answer, ask what it ignored and how that would change the result.
Learning objectives
- Use SI units and convert, e.g. km h⁻¹ to m s⁻¹.
- Tell scalars from vectors.
- Use with m s⁻².
- Explain how a model's assumptions affect its answer and suggest improvements.
A model says a dropped stone takes s to fall. A real stone takes s. Is the model wrong?
Core idea
In 1999 NASA's Mars Climate Orbiter was destroyed because one team worked in pound-force seconds and another in newton seconds. Units are not decoration: mixing them gives answers that are wrong by large factors.
SI units: m, kg, s; newton . Convert everything first. km h ÷ 3.6 = m s. Weight , m s.
1. Base and derived units
- 1 km = 1000 m; 1 h = 3600 s.
- Simplify the fraction.
Convert 72 km h, 450 g (and find its weight), 2.5 minutes.
- Goal
- SI values.
- Strategy
- Standard factors.
- Speed.
- Mass in kg, then weight.
- Time.
Convert 15 m s to km h.
Summary
- SI throughout.
- ÷3.6; .
- Newton
- Force giving 1 kg an acceleration of 1 m s.
