Learning objectives

  • Sketch y=exy=e^x, y=e−xy=e^{-x} and y=ln⁡xy=\ln x, with intercepts and asymptotes.
  • Sketch transformations such as y=2−e−xy=2-e^{-x} and y=ln⁡(x+3)y=\ln(x+3).
  • Use exe^x and ln⁡x\ln x as inverse functions to solve equations exactly.
  • Find inverses of functions involving exe^x and ln⁡x\ln x.

Core idea

Start hereThe most natural number

Invest 1 dollar at 100% interest a year. Paid once: 2 dollars. Paid twice (50% each half): 1.52=2.251.5^2=2.25. Monthly: (1+112)12=2.613(1+\frac1{12})^{12}=2.613. Every instant: 2.71828…2.71828\ldots That limit is ee, and exe^x has a unique property: its gradient equals its own value everywhere.

The big idea

e=lim⁡n→∞(1+1n)n≈2.718e=\lim_{n\to\infty}\left(1+\frac1n\right)^n\approx2.718. y=exy=e^x satisfies ddxex=ex\frac{d}{dx}e^x=e^x. Its inverse is ln⁡x=log⁡ex\ln x=\log_ex. The graphs are reflections in y=xy=x: exe^x has range y>0y>0; ln⁡x\ln x needs x>0x>0.

1. Exponential graphs

Comparing bases: y = bˣ
−2−112123456780xyy = eˣ(0, 1)
The line y=x+1y=x+1 has gradient 11. Only when b=e≈2.72b=e\approx2.72 does the curve just touch it at (0,1)(0,1).
  • y=bxy=b^x (b>1b>1): through (0,1)(0,1); grows rapidly; y→0y\to0 as x→−∞x\to-\infty (asymptote y=0y=0).
  • 0<b<10<b<1: decays.
  • For 2x2^x, gradient ≈ 0.69×0.69\timesheight; for 3x3^x, ≈ 1.10×1.10\timesheight; for exe^x, exactly 1×1\times.

2. ln x

eˣ and ln x
−4−22468−22460xyy = eˣy = ln x(0, 1)(1, 0)
y=exy=e^x has asymptote y=0y=0 and is always positive; y=ln⁡xy=\ln x has asymptote x=0x=0.
y=ex  ⟺  x=ln⁡yeln⁡x=x (x>0)ln⁡ex=xy=e^x\iff x=\ln y\qquad e^{\ln x}=x\ (x>0)\qquad\ln e^x=x
where
ln⁡\ln
natural logarithm, log⁡e\log_e.
  • ln⁡1=0\ln1=0, ln⁡e=1\ln e=1, ln⁡x<0\ln x<0 for 0<x<10<x<1.
  • Domain x>0x>0; range all reals; asymptote x=0x=0.

3. Transformations

Worked exampleSketch y=3−2e−xy=3-2e^{-x}

Find intercepts and asymptote.

Goal
Key features.
Strategy
Build from exe^x by transformations.
  1. ex→e−xe^x\to e^{-x}
    Reflect in the yy-axis: decay.
  2. →−2e−x\to-2e^{-x}
    Stretch ×2 and reflect in the xx-axis: approaches 00 from below.
  3. →3−2e−x\to3-2e^{-x}
    Up 3: asymptote y=3y=3.
  4. x=0: y=1;y=0: e−x=1.5⇒x=−ln⁡1.5≈−0.405x=0:\ y=1;\quad y=0:\ e^{-x}=1.5\Rightarrow x=-\ln1.5\approx-0.405
    Intercepts.
AnswerAsymptote y=3y=3; yy-intercept 11; xx-intercept −0.405-0.405.
✓ CheckAs x→∞x\to\infty, e−x→0e^{-x}\to0, so y→3y\to3 ✓.
Edge caseDomain of ln⁡(…)\ln(\ldots) y=ln⁡(2x−6)y=\ln(2x-6) needs 2x−6>02x-6>0: x>3x>3.
Pause and think

Solve e2x=5e^{2x}=5.

HistoryDiscovered through interest. Jacob Bernoulli found the number 2.718…2.718\ldots in 1683 while studying compound interest, as the limit of (1+1n)n\left(1+\tfrac1n\right)^n. Leonhard Euler named it ee around 1731 and showed how it connects to almost everything, including the famous identity eiπ+1=0e^{i\pi}+1=0.
