Arithmetic Progressions
Sequences that go up (or down) by the same amount each time: the th term, the sum of the first terms and why it works, and how to find unknowns from given terms or sums.
Learning objectives
- Recognise an arithmetic progression (AP) and find its common difference .
- Use and .
- Form and solve equations to find , or .
- Use APs in real situations such as savings and seating.
Add up without adding one number at a time. Hint: pair the first number with the last.
Core idea
The story goes that a teacher set the class to keep them busy, and young Carl Gauss answered almost immediately. His trick: pair the first and last (), second and second-last (), and so on. Every pair makes , and there are pairs. That trick works for any sequence that goes up in equal steps.
An arithmetic progression (AP) adds the same common difference each time. Its th term is and the sum of terms is .
1. The nth term
- where
- the first term.
- the common difference (any term minus the one before).
- the position number.
Why ? To get from term to term you take steps of size .
An AP has 3rd term and 8th term . Find , , and the 20th term.
- Goal
- , , .
- Strategy
- Two facts give two simultaneous equations.
- and .
- Subtract the first from the second.
- Back-substitute.
- th term formula.
2. The sum: Gauss's trick
- Write the sum forwards; is the last term.
- The same sum backwards.
- Add the two lines term by term: the 's cancel in every column.
- There are columns.
- Substitute .
Find .
- Goal
- The total.
- Strategy

- Goal
- Smallest whole .
- Strategy
- Write , form a quadratic inequality, solve, round up.
- , .
- Inequality.
- Positive root of the quadratic.
Find with the formula.
Summary
- .
- (Gauss's pairing).
- Common difference
- The constant added each step.
- Series
- The sum of terms of a sequence.
