Modulus Graphs and Equations
What means, how to sketch by reflecting the negative part, and two reliable ways to solve modulus equations: squaring both sides, or splitting into cases and checking.
Learning objectives
- Understand as distance from , and as the distance between and .
- Sketch , marking the vertex and intercepts.
- Solve and by squaring or by cases.
- Solve , checking for and rejecting invalid solutions.
On a number line, which numbers are exactly units away from ?
Core idea
A lift is at floor . It moves to floor (car park) or floor . How far did it travel? floors either way, regardless of direction. Distance ignores sign. The modulus is the mathematical "distance from zero", and it creates graphs with sharp corners and equations with two answers.
is the size of without its sign: if , if . is the distance between and . splits into or ; reflects the negative parts of upward.
1. Definition
- where
- when
- minus a negative is positive: .
- , , .
- = distance between and on the number line.
- but (not always equal).
2. Graphs
To draw : draw , then reflect every part below the -axis in the axis. The vertex of is where the inside is zero: .
3. Solving equations
Solve.
- Goal
- All .
- Strategy
- The inside is or .
- Positive case.
- Negative case.
Solve.
- Goal
- All .
- Strategy
- Both sides are , so squaring loses nothing and gains nothing; .
- Square both sides.
- Expand.
- Collect; factorise.
Solve.
- Goal
- All valid .
- Strategy
- Try both cases; reject any where the right side would be negative.
- Case 1.
Check: RHS , but a modulus can't be negative. Reject.
- Case 2.
Check: and ✓.
Solve .
Summary
- = distance from .
- : two cases.
