  1. Parabola and rectangular hyperbola

The parabola y2=4axy^2=4ax is every point equidistant from the focus (a,0)(a,0) and the directrix x=−ax=-a; parametrically (at2,2at)(at^2,2at). The rectangular hyperbola xy=c2xy=c^2 has parametric form (ct,ct)\left(ct,\frac ct\right). Parameters make tangents and normals tidy.

  2. Ellipse and hyperbola

x2a2+y2b2=1\frac{x^2}{a^2}+\frac{y^2}{b^2}=1 is an ellipse with b2=a2(1−e2)b^2=a^2(1-e^2); x2a2−y2b2=1\frac{x^2}{a^2}-\frac{y^2}{b^2}=1 is a hyperbola with b2=a2(e2−1)b^2=a^2(e^2-1). Both have foci (±ae,0)(\pm ae,0) and directrices x=±aex=\pm\frac ae; distance to a focus is ee times distance to the matching directrix.
