Cumulative Frequency
Cumulative frequency is a running total. Plot it against the upper class boundaries and join the points to get an S-shaped curve. Read across at for the median, and at and for the quartiles. The interquartile range is the spread of the middle half.
Learning objectives
- Build a cumulative frequency table from a frequency table.
- Plot cumulative frequency against upper class boundaries.
- Estimate the median, quartiles, interquartile range and percentiles.
- Find how many values lie above or below a given value.
runners finish a race. You want the time that splits the fastest quarter from the rest. Which runner's time do you look at?
Core idea
With 80 plant heights in a grouped table, you can't see the middle plant. But a running total graph climbs from 0 to 80; reading across at 40 finds the median.
Plot running totals at upper class boundaries; join with a smooth curve. Median at ; quartiles at , ; IQR .
1. Reading the graph
Find the median, IQR, and the number above a value .
- Goal
- Readings.
- Strategy
- Read across, then down.
- Read across at 40 to the curve, down to the median.
- Quartile positions; IQR .
- Read cf at ; subtract from total.
Why is IQR better than range here?
Summary
- Upper boundaries; S-curve.
- Median ; IQR from , .
- Cumulative frequency
- Running total.
- Interquartile range
