Modulus Inequalities
Solving inequalities with moduli: the "between" and "outside" patterns, squaring when both sides are moduli, and using a sketch when a modulus is compared with a line.
Learning objectives
- Rewrite as , and as or .
- Solve by squaring and solving a quadratic inequality.
- Solve (with a line) using the critical values and a sketch.
- Write solutions in correct inequality form.
Which numbers are less than units from on the number line? Which are more than units away?
Core idea
A machine cuts rods meant to be mm long, accurate to within mm. Acceptable lengths satisfy : "the distance from is at most ", i.e. . Modulus inequalities are statements about distance.
(within of ); or (further than ). For , square both sides.
1. Distance on the number line
Solve.
- Goal
- An interval.
- Strategy
- Unpack to a double inequality.
- Within of .
- Add to all three parts.
- Halve.
Solve.
- Goal
- Two pieces.
- Strategy
- More than away from .
- Outside.
- Solve each.
2. Two moduli: square
Solve.
- Goal
- Set of .
- Strategy
- Both sides , so .
- Square and expand.
- Rearrange; factorise.
- ∪ shape positive outside the roots.
3. Modulus against a line: use the graph
Solve.
- Goal
- Set of .
- Strategy
- Find where they're equal, then use a sketch.
- Left branch meets .
- Right branch: never meets (parallel).
Sketch: is above the V to the right of .
Solve .
Summary
- : between; : outside.
- Two moduli: square.
- Otherwise: critical values + sketch.
- Critical value
- Where the two sides are equal.
