Period 3 Trends and Oxides
Across period 3 atomic radius decreases (more protons, same shielding). Melting points rise from Na to Si (metallic bonding strengthens, then giant covalent Si), then fall sharply to simple molecular P₄, S₈, Cl₂ and atomic Ar. Conductivity is high for metals, low for Si (semiconductor), negligible after. Oxides go from basic ionic (, MgO) through amphoteric () and giant covalent (, acidic) to acidic simple molecular (, , ). Chlorides go from ionic (NaCl dissolves, pH 7) to covalent ones that hydrolyse to acidic solutions (, ).
Learning objectives
- Describe and explain trends across period 3 in radius, melting point and conductivity.
- Describe reactions of period 3 elements with oxygen, chlorine and water.
- Relate the bonding of oxides and chlorides to their reactions with water.
Silicon is in the middle of period 3 but has the highest melting point. Why?
Core idea
Period 3 runs from explosive sodium to inert argon, passing a semiconductor, a yellow solid and a toxic gas. The changes follow from structure and bonding.
Across period 3, nuclear charge rises, atoms shrink, and bonding changes from metallic to giant covalent to simple molecular. Oxides and chlorides change from ionic and basic to covalent and acidic.
1. Melting points
Structure explains the melting point pattern.
2. Oxides with water
Predict the pH when MgO and SO₂ are separately added to water.
- Goal
- Equations and pH.
- Strategy
- Ionic basic vs covalent acidic.
- Sparingly soluble base: pH about 9.
- Acidic oxide: pH about 3.
Why doesn't SiO₂ react with water even though it's an acidic oxide?
Summary
- Radius decreases across.
- Melting point peaks at Si.
- Oxides and chlorides: ionic → covalent.
- Periodicity
- Repeating pattern of properties across periods.
- Amphoteric
- Reacts with both acids and bases.
- Hydrolysis
- Reaction with water that breaks a compound apart.
