Learning objectives
Recognise when dxdy=f(x)g(y) can be separated.
Separate, integrate both sides and include one arbitrary constant.
Rearrange to y=…, handling logarithms and exponentials correctly.
Use a condition to choose one curve from the family of solutions.
Pause and think
dxdy=2xy. If you divide both sides by y, what is the left-hand side the derivative of?

Core idea
Start hereFrom a rule about change to a formula
"Grows in proportion to its size": dxdy=y. Which functions do that? We could guess ex, but guessing doesn't scale. If the x's and y's can be pulled to opposite sides, we can integrate each side and find every solution.
The big idea
If dxdy=f(x)g(y): separate to ∫g(y)1dy=∫f(x)dx, integrate both sides, add one constant. A given point fixes the constant (particular solution).
1. The method
Why separating is legitimate
g(y)1dxdy=f(x)
Divide by g(y).
∫g(y)1dxdydx=∫f(x)dx
Integrate both sides with respect to x.
∫g(y)1dy=∫f(x)dx
Substitution rule: dxdydx becomes dy.
Worked exampledxdy=y
Find the general solution.
Goal
y in terms of x.
Strategy
Separate.
1
∫y1dy=∫1dx
Separate.
2
ln∣y∣=x+c
Integrate.
3
∣y∣=ex+c=ecex⇒y=Aex
Un-log; A=±ec.
Answery=Aex.
✓ CheckdxdAex=Aex=y ✓.
dy/dx = y: the family y = A eˣEvery curve in the family obeys dxdy=y. The value of A is fixed by one known point.
Worked exampledxdy=xy, y(0)=2
Find the particular solution.
Goal
y.
Strategy
Separate; find c; rearrange.
1
∫ydy=∫xdx⇒lny=21x2+c
Integrate.
2
ln2=c
Condition.
3
y=ex2/2+ln2=2ex2/2
Un-log.
Answery=2ex2/2.
✓ Checky′=2xex2/2=xy ✓; y(0)=2 ✓.
Worked exampledxdy=2x2y2 through (1,1)
Find y.
Goal
y explicitly.
Strategy
Separate; negative powers.
1
∫y−2dy=∫21x−2dx
Separate.
2
−y1=−2x1+c
Integrate.
3
−1=−21+c⇒c=−21
Point.
4
y1=2xx+1⇒y=x+12x
Rearrange.
Answery=x+12x.
✓ Checky(1)=1 ✓.
⚠️ Common misconceptionTwo constantsOne constant is enough: c2−c1 is just another constant.
Pause and think
Solve dxdy=ycosx, y(0)=2.
Summary
Separate, integrate, one constant.
Use the condition, then rearrange.
Key words
General solution
Contains an arbitrary constant.
Particular solution
One curve fixed by a condition.
Solutions of dy/dx = y: one curve for each starting valueSeparating: ∫y1dy=∫1dx, so lny=x+c and y=Aex. A boundary condition chooses one curve from the family.
📜 HistoryLeibniz and the fraction that is not a fraction.Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz invented the notation dxdy and, around 1691, the method of separating the variables. His notation is so well designed that moving dx across "like a fraction" gives the right answer, even though dxdy is really a limit, not a fraction.
